Vaccines, Lies, and False Hope
This week’s Friday Fax on the new UN HPV vaccination scheme seems to have touched a nerve. Every woman I’ve talked to is appalled.
One woman just wrote to say this is “just what we need, more vaccinations that will only encourage minors to feel protected against STDs and thus engage in sexual activity they are not ready for.”
Another just wrote and described the aggressive 2006 Australian campaign launched in TV ads, bus stop billboards, and pamphlets left at work places, featuring female celebraties sporting arm bandaids and saying “I’ve had it.”
The woman, a scientist, said she was skeptical about a cancer vaccine and only realized it was for HPV when her doctor asked if she’d had the “cervical cancer vaccine” and then noticed he had typed in “no HPV vaccine” on the computer.
“I felt our society was being cheated,” she said, “It was as if they were being given false hope.”
