US slams ECOSOC over abortion

The Obama administration should be ashamed of its response to the recent elections to the Commission on Population and Development (CPD).

US UN Ambassador Susan Rice singled out Iran’s successful election for its condemnation of ECOSOC–not because that country opposes the United States on pertinent US foreign policy issues such as Israel or alleviating poverty–but because Iran opposed the US promotion of “reproductive rights,” aka abortion, at the CPD meeting last April.

Rice said nothing of Norway’s heavy-handed dealings through its embassies all over the world that got Malta’s candidacy defeated–also because it opposed abortion at this year’s meeting.
