RIP Otto von Habsburg

By Terrence McKeegan, J.D. | July 5, 2011

Yesterday, one of the most important figures of the 20th century, Archduke Otto von Habsburg, passed away.

Otto von Habsburg was the last heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, a Crown Prince at age four, the biggest obstacle to Hitler’s plans to invade Austria in the 1930s, a man without a passport after living for most of World War II in exile, and a leader of the pan-European movement who would become known as the Father of the European Parliament.

Even more notably, Otto carried on the defense of the Catholic faith in a post-modern Europe, following in the footsteps of his father, Emperor Karl I, who was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2004.

The UK Daily Telegraph has a good summary of this great man’s life here.
