It’s World Breastfeeding Week
The World Health Organization is targeting youth again this week, but this time we should applaud. It’s breastfeeding week. This year WHO is trying to help the world’s youngest mothers nurse their babies.
Only 40% of infants under 6 months are breastfed exclusively, WHO says, and they seek to increase that number in 170 countries. The remaining 60% miss out, for whatever reasons, on unique physical and emotional benefits that only their own mothers can provide.
While I can’t comment on the techno-focus of WHO’s outreach this year, I applaud the fact that this most important aspect of motherhood is still on the map. Imagine a UN in which breastfeeding gets even more than a week.
