At the tender age of 10…
The international media is buzzing about french fashion model Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau, who was featured in a provocative spread in Vogue earlier this year.
While Vogue can hardly be considered the barometer of the civilized world, what is troubling about Miss Blondeau is her place among an increasing number of pre-teen child models and actresses who appear seductively in centerfolds and on the silver screen. Exhibition of a women in sexually provocative ways is a standard in the fashion and movie industry – but when the model is a child, the exhibition becomes dangerously similar to child pornography.
The uproar about this 10-year old is reminiscent of the controversy over the recommendations made by the United Nations system and organizations like International Planned Parenthood that sexuality education, access to abortion, and HIV education are necessary for adolescents as young as 10. Discussions like this should remind us that at the tender age of 10, the average child is (and should be) more interested in dolls and ball games than stilettos and sex appeal.
