FDA Approved Embryonic Stem Cell Program Abandoned

By Stefano Gennarini, J.D. | November 22, 2011

Last week Geron Corporation announced that it would abandon its embryonic stem cell program in order to fund more promising cancer programs. Geron had received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to carry out a trial embryonic stem cell therapy in 2009. You can see the press release here.

Wesley J. Smith reports in National Right to Life News Today how the media has kept this failure hushed. Smith mocks the media for previously hailing the FDA approval of the Geron trial as a new era in medicine. He also highlights how the media has been biased in failing to report both the lack of success of embryonic stem cell programs and the successes of adult stem cell trials.

There is no reason why embryonic stem cell therapy should be a bigger story than adult stem cell therapy. The difference in media attention merely signals a preference for stories affirming a fixed ideological position on the rights of the unborn.
