Russians for life

Russians were the first to legalize abortion in the modern era, beginning in 1920. Partly as a result, the country’s population has contacted by more than 10 million since 1988.

The crisis has spurred academic rigor in Russian demographic study.

It was hard to miss the irony at the Commission on Population and Development two weeks ago, where a Russian demographer sat beside one of America’s top abortion advocates, now the head of the Guttmacher Institute. His talk highlighted the century-long myopia on controlling births — still afflicting the West as embodied in the abortion-proponent’s presence at the event —  that has left Russians without the skills or even the data to comprehend and respond to the aging catastrophe.

The Russian Orthodox Church’s latest gambit to turn the tide was a pro-life campaign at all of its Easter Sunday services – part of its effort, with the government, to stem what it sees as moral as well as demographic decline.
