Rep. Blackburn Introduces First Pro-Life Bill in 113th Congress
Just two weeks shy of the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade – the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in this country, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) has introduced a bill that if passed would prevent U.S. taxpayer money from flowing to abortion businesses.
As a woman I believe America deserves better than abortion. America shouldn’t celebrate abortion and our taxpayers shouldn’t subsidize abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood, who profit from the destruction of human life with taxpayer money. It’s fiscally irresponsible and morally indefensible, said Blackburn.
The bill H.R. 61 the “Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act” would prevent the “Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from providing federal family planning assistance under Title X to abortion businesses until they certify they won’t provide and refer for abortions.”
Last year the nations largest abortion business, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) reported performing over 330,000 abortions. The 2011-12 annual report reveals U.S. taxpayer dollars in the amount of $542 million flowing to this organization. While these funds are prohibited for abortion it allows more of PPFA money to be used for abortion. According to their own reports over 90% of the groups services to pregnant women are abortion related.
Congresswoman Blackburn’s leadership on this issue was a fight previously lead by Congressman Mike Pence. Pence, a longtime defender of life is now the governor of Indiana.
