African Commonwealth Countries Resist Pressure from David Cameron on LGBT Rights
A fortnight ago David Cameron was interviewed on the Andrew Marr Show in Perth, Australia. He said that British aid should come with “more strings attached” and that Britain was pressuring countries on LGBT issues.
Cameron stated that “Britain is now one of the premier aid givers in the world. We want to see countries that receive our aid adhering to proper human rights, and that includes how people treat gay and lesbian people”. He also mentioned the need to protect the rights of Christians.
There has been a barrage of responses to the UK Prime Minister’s comments from African leaders condemning David Cameron’s attitude as imperialistic. LifeSiteNews reported on some of these reactions last week.
Cameron has been described as a “bully” by Africans who feel insulted by his statements. Several African leaders and the media have condemned this as an attempt to have them trade their cultural and religious values in exchange for aid.
