Last Thursday, Brazil’s supreme court said homosexual partnerships are a matter of privacy and eqaulity before the law and deserve many of the same benefits that marriages are granted, according to Reuters. The country’s Catholic bishops weighed in against the ruling. Brazil has the world’s largest Catholic population (140 million of its 190 million citizens as of 2008).

Brazil becomes the second Latin American country to allow homosexual unions. Argentina’s Senate passed homosexual marriage legislation last July.
