Checking in on the MDGs
Yesterday, the UN released its 2011 report on the progress made in achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
The report, generally optimistic about progress made, unsurprisingly recommends that the international community provide increased funding to contraception and family planning services to aid in achieving MDG 5 reducing the maternal mortality ratio, and increased condom use to combat HIV/AIDS.
The MDGs are set to expire in 2015, but there have been disagreements about whether progress on achieving the goals is on track, or if they can be achieved on time. It is possible that the MDGs will be extended beyond 2015, if the recent extension of the ICPD’s Program of Action beyond 2014 is any indication.
