Chinese woman considers illegal abortion at 8 months to save husband’s job

Despite the propaganda, Beijing’s one child policy still takes millions of lives. Its cruel enforcement mechanisms wreak havoc on millions more.

This week the South China Morning Post reported on the plight of a 41 year-old woman from Yunnan Province going by the name Chen who is 8 months pregnant. She said, “I’m fearful. If my husband believes I must abort the child, there’s nothing I can do.”

Chen’s situation has caused public outcry, emblematic of the universal loathing of the policy. Yet there is little chance it will make a difference.

Western media doesn’t help when it perpetuates the inaccurate understanding that the tweaking of China’s family planning policy last year put an end to such abuses. The policy change made no difference for people like Chen and her husband who want a second child but who don’t meet the strict criteria for the new policy — because each of them has a sibling.
