CRR Donation Solicitation Falsely Claims UN Decision “Requires” Peru to Liberalize Abortion
In a fundraising appeal email to their subscribers the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) falsely claimed that a recent decision by the CEDAW committee “requires” Peru to change their abortion laws. CRR brought this case to the UN committee on behalf of a teenage girl, claiming she is now a quadriplegic due to doctors refusing to operate because she was pregnant, a pregnancy that resulted from being raped.
From the CRR email: “This is the first UN decision in history requiring a country to protect women’s health and human rights by changing its abortion laws.”
C-FAM staffer Stefano Gennarini reported on this false claim by CRR last week. CRR knows full well that any decision coming from the CEDAW committee carries no binding legal authority on States. However the committee will continue to use this review process to bully countries that restrict abortion. You can read more about the LC v. Peru case here.
CRR’s mission is to make abortion unrestricted and easily accessible in every region of the globe and they will continue to exploit young girls and women to carry out this mission.
“The Center is determined to bring the fight for reproductive rights to every woman and girl around the world. Your generous donation today will help fund new offices in Africa, Asia, and South America, wrote CRR president.
