Day of the Unborn Child in Slovakia

On Sunday 25 March, civil society activists in Slovakia came up with an original idea to commemorate the Day of the Unborn Child. They arranged 13,000 children’s shoes in the shape of a heart on Bratislava’s Main Square to show just how many children we have lost due to abortion in 2011.

The scale of the abortion problem is certainly not insignificant in this largely Catholic country. Public debate on the issue, however, is woefully insufficient. Unsurprisingly, main stream media completely ignored the presence of a shoe-heart in the middle of the capital city.

Apart from the gross injustice, abortions go hand in hand with lower fertility rate. Given Slovakia’s demographic decline (with population of only about 5 million), the loss of 13,000- size of a small town- within just one year should raise not only moral but also political, social and economic concerns.
