European Parliament resolves to fight HIV/AIDS through … abortion!

By J.C. von Krempach, J.D. | December 3, 2011

Fortunately, hardly any citizen ever reads the pompous yet irremediably silly resolutions through which the European Parliament lets the world know about its opinion on all matters that fall outside its competence.

And even more fortunately, fighting AIDS is not one of the responsibilities of the European Parliament.

Last week, the Parliament commemorated World AIDS Day through the adoption of a Resolution on the EU response to HIV/AIDS, in which, among other things, it…

“calls on the Commission and Council to ensure access to high-quality, comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services, information and supplies; takes the view that this should cover, inter alia, confidential and voluntary counselling, testing and treatment for HIV and all sexually transmitted infections; prevention of unintended pregnancies; equitable and affordable access to contraceptives, including access to emergency contraception; safe and legal abortion, including post-abortion care; and care and treatment to prevent vertical transmission of HIV, including to partners and children.”

The drafters of that resolution must be true enimies of human life.

Never mind the little formality that neither the European Parliament nor, for that matter, the EU as a whole, has any competence to legalise abortion. Never mind that is has been proven over and again that the distribution of condoms and other sex gadgets, and the trivialisation of irresponsible sexual behaviour (through the making available of contraception) contributes to spreading HIV/AIDS rather preventing it. Never mind that abortion cannot be a “health service”, because pregnancy is not a disease.

But what does abortion have to do with the “response against AIDS”? How would it contribute to fighting the disease?

Does the Parliament believe that the children of women carrying the HI-virus should be aborted? In that case, someone should tell tem that modern medicines has the means to avoid that the virus will be transmitted to those children.

Does the Parliament believe that abortion prevents the infection of women with the HI-virus? Similar arguments have been made for condom use, and have been disproven. It is true that HIV/AIS is sexually transmitted. But to avoid transmission, you have to avoid sexual intercourse with a person carrying the virus. It is an absurd assumption that, following such intercourse, abortion could prevent infection with the disease. It seems that the honourable Members do not even know the basics.

Or do our honourable Parliamentarians believe that women carrying the virus will be healed by aborting their children? That again seems a rather strange assumption.

Or do they think that women who themselves carry a mortal disease will find moral relief if at least their children, who could live without the virus, do not survive them? In the sense of: “If I have to die, let my child die with me”? This again is an astonishing thought.

My suspicion is: a majority of the Member of Parliament who voted in favour of this outstandingly silly text probably had not read it before and therefore did not know what they were raising their hands for. They naively thought that the purpose of the Resolution was, as the title misleadingly indicates, to set a sign against AIDS.

But in fact it isnt. The liberal left in the European Parliament (including the representatives of mainstream socialist and liberal parties) have hijacked the AIDS issue in order to push for the legalising of abortion, or for gay rights. Very clearly, these people are completely unconcerned about people suffering from AIDS, they just cynically use them as a pretext for their own “sexual rights” agenda.

I must say I am rather disgusted by the people pretending to represent us. They are either incompetent, or evil, or both. Rather than making a contribution to eradicating AIDS, this Resolution, which uses the suffering of the poorest and most helpless merely as a pretext, discloses a lot about the mindset of our political mandarins that we would have preferred not to know.

Women and children suffering from AIDS have deserved better than this.
