Forcing IVF in Costa Rica
Although the tropical breeze, sounds of parrots, and the taste of grano de oro are hard to beat, not all in Costa Rica is paradisal. While checking the local news after arriving here in San José, Costa Rica, I came across an article in the Tico Times discussing the future of IVF in Costa Rica.
According to Carlos Vargas, the Costa Rican Foreign Ministry’s legal director, “Costa Rica has no other option but to approve a bill seeking to legalize in-vitro fertilization in the country by May 31.” According to unstated “experts” if the proposed bill is not passed, fines from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for international law violations, and citizens rights violations will ensue.
In spite of threats of fines, international law violations, and ultimatums from legal directors, there is still much to be said about the legality and precedent for overthrowing Costa Rica’s sovereignty in the name of “rights” and “law.”
More to come on this as it develops, from our legal team.
