G77 Blasts European Countries Over Food Security
This week the negotiations on the outcome document of the Rio Conference on Sustainable Development, to be held in Brazil in June, began at UN Headquarters in NY.
Today the Group of G77 made a very strong intervention during the negotiations of the outcome document section dealing with food and water security. the G77 group rebuked the EU and Switzerland for asking for the deletion of a sentence that would have asked developed countries to change their “lifestyle” and “consumption patterns.” The intervention mentioned that to ask for the deletion of that sentence was a “crime” given that 1 Billion people in the developing world live on $1.25 per day or less, and over 2 billion on less than $3 per day.
The statement was part of a number of complaints by countries that are unhappy with the way the negotiations are taking place. The G77 complaint emphasized the inefficiency of the process. Currently each delegation is making new proposals as well as reviewing those made by other delegations, with the result that it still remains unclear where each delegation stands, delaying the time when consensus can be reached.
