The last Italian hope against homosexual “marriage”
“Three centuries ago, Giambattista Vico wrote that societies collapse when these the three fundamental categories are undermined: the altars (meaning religion, with a capital “r”, not the specific confession), marriages (therefore, the family), and burials (meaning the traditions of our fathers, of our land). If we lack these pillars, we become liquid. We are already liquid, indeed (…)”.
With these words, Mauro Ronco recently warned his country, pointing at the risk that was implicit in the legalization of same-sex unions. The Italian Professor of Law, and renowned Criminal Law scholar, underlined the importance of the family in a moment of economic and financial crisis. He mentioned, also, all the specific legal inconsistencies of the particular bill that, unfortunately, the Italian Parliament ended up approving, through a legislative process that looked more like an imposition than a democratic vote.
That bill, not only according to him, but according to the opinion of 600 Italian scholars, lawyers, and judges, violates the Constitution. It illegitimately expands the rights that it reserved to the family to unions that are not equivalent nor analogous to the family. These 600 jurists, united in an effort that is headed by the Italian association “Centro Studi Rosario Livatino” are now hoping in the veto power of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
What the President could do, according to the Italian Constitution, is to send the bill back to the chambers, for a second approval, if he agrees that its provisions are not consistent with the highest law of the land.
Nobody knows nor can predict if this will happen. What surely happened, is that the city that hosts the Holy See, the heart of Christianity, has decided to use the word “love” to speak of a bill that will soon deprive children of their natural mothers and fathers. One wonders how long it will take for homosexual couples to earn the “right” to see their “marriages” celebrated inside the churches, by priests who will not be allowed to object. It may take a while, but there is no reason why it should not happen – based on “love”.
CitizenGo may soon be launching a campaign, to collect the signatures of the people requesting President Mattarella to stop this law. Meanwhile, the pro-family movement has not surrendered. Indeed, the Italian supporters of the family are well and alive. They are determined at fighting this bill back, and will oppose the Government of Matteo Renzi in any possible way. Most especially, they aim at blocking its project of constitutional reforms next October: a project which, in their view, may lead to a one-man democracy.
