More on the partnerships between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood
C-FAM has already received numerous responses and questions on the subject of this week’s Friday Fax on the explicit International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) sex brochure that was distributed at a Girl Scout side event at the UN Beijing +15 conference.
Both the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and Girl Scouts of the USA have long-standing partnerships with Planned Parenthood. Here are just a few examples:
- According to IPPF Europe’s website:
Youth Organisations are very present and active in supporting and further promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Organisations such as the International Federation of Medical Students’ Association (IFMSA) or the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) are running projects and activities across Europe and the world. Volunteers of those organisations, in collaboration with the community in most of the cases, are actually running medical centres, organising seminars, providing information training sessions, peer education or simply supporting members of a community.
- Going back at least to 1990, IPPF and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) partnered with WAGGGS and World Young Women’s Christian Association (World YWCA) to promote family planning and “adolescent reproductive health.”
- According to the Population Research Institute:
The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAG-GGS), with a total membership of 7.75 million, conducts family life education projects in conjunction with the International Planned Parenthood Federation.
Among the organization’s activities are: a five year project on family life and community development in Sri Lanka; a community outreach adolescent pregnancy program in the Philippines; a family life/education/responsible living program in Malaysia; a European region seminar on health and sex education entitled “Our Health, Our Hands;” and an international family life education seminar at the WAGGGS’ World Center in Mexico titled, “The Many Faces of Today’s Family.”
- Kathy Cloninger (CEO, Girl Scouts of the USA), in a 2004 interview on NBC’s “Today Show:”
…we partner with many organizations. We have relationships with our church communities, with YWCAs, and with Planned Parenthood organizations across the country, to bring information-based sex education programs to girls.”
