C-Fam President Austin Ruse sent a letter to Latvia’s parliamentarians to urge support for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

Ruse told the Members of Parliament:

We urge you to support the Constitutional amendment to affirm the family as the union of the man and a woman. Protection of the family is a cause central to the future of humankind and the development and wellbeing of children around the world.

The Constitutional amendment currently under consideration in Latvia is fully in agreement with the obligations of Latvia under international law. Any confusion as to what constates a family undermines the fundamental human right of children to know and be cared for by their mother and father.

In the letter Ruse also transmitted THE FAMILY ARTICLES, which explain how international law provides exceptional protections for the natural family, that is, the union of a man and a woman in marriage. The articles also explain how the best available social science validates the exceptional status of the family in international law.

The articles are the official platform of Civil Society for the Family, a global alliance of over 200 organizations. The full articles and detailed explanatory notes on the social science, law and policy are available on the website: www.civilsocietyforthefamily.org.
