Pro-life province established in Argentina

By Timothy Herrmann | December 8, 2011

In response to the recent attempt of radical politicians to legalize abortion in Argentina, Governor Ricardo Colombi declared his state of Correientes the “Pro-life province” of Argentina. His stance on abortion aligns his state not only with the position of the Catholic Church in Argentina but also with the majority of Argentina’s population. His decree sends a strong message to abortion advocates throughout Latin America at a time when abortion laws are being challenged by fringe groups in nearly every country.

Colombi is not the only prominent politician that has recently reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the protection of the unborn. Most notably, Cristina Kirchner, the president of Argentina, recently refused to support an initiative in congress to decriminalize abortion. In the last few months, Juan Manuel Urtubey, the governor of Salta, and Jorge Capitanich, the governor of the Chaco, have also taken firm stances against decriminalization as well.
