UNGA71: SOGI Vote Analysis
It is remarkable how close the vote in the General Assembly on the homosexual rights special procedure actually was yesterday.
Going into the General Assembly Hall, the African Group needed the support of 7 more countries than it had last month in the 3rd Committee. It actually gained 9 votes, 2 more than it needed. But it also lost 9 votes that it very much needed. Hence the identical outcome: 84 against, and 77 for, the African proposal.
This analysis does not factor the many countries with sodomy laws that either abstained or voted alongisde the Europeans, even if it is inconsistent with their laws. at least 18 coountries with sodomy laws voted against the Africans in the 3rd committee. If those votes were factored, the African proposal would have prevailed, without a doubt.
