Supreme Court of Argentina Eases Restrictions on Abortion
On Tuesday the Supreme Court of Argentina ruled that a woman need only make a sworn statement that her pregnancy is the result of rape in order to obtain an abortion legally.
In Argentina abortion may be performed only when the life of the mother is in danger or when the pregnancy is the result of rape. Previously a judicial order was needed to obtain an abortion in both cases. The decision changed this requirement in the case of rape. It is unlikely that a judicial order will be needed in the other case also.
José María Arancedo, the president of the Argentinian episcopal conference is reported as saying: “abortion is the termination of an innocent life. No reason at all exists to justify the termination of an innocent life, not even in case of rape.”
