Sweden to Hear Home Schooling Appeals
Sweden’s Court of Appeals has just last week agreed to hear two challenges to the nation’s new ban on home education. The decision is in stark contrast to the court’s views on the matter only two years previous. The first case involves a young autistic child with special needs who under home education conditions could thrive. However, her placement in a normal school environment could jeopardize her long term well being. Nonetheless, the family’s application to home educate was denied and the family fined on an accruing basis each day their daughter did not attend school. The fine currently is nearly 30, 000 USD. The second case involves a direct challenge to the ban by a family who’s child does not have any special needs but whom they desire to home educate in the belief that it is in their child’s best interest. These two challenges will set incredibly important precedents for Sweden and beyond on the home education front. I will keep you posted on the cases as they develop.
