Sweden’s Parliament militates against freedom of conscience
Readers of this blog will remember having read that last summer the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe discussed a motion for a Resolution that would have demanded Member States to pass legislation that would curb the freedom of conscience of medical doctors and nurses, and oblige them to practise abortion and similar acts against their will. This absurd proposal (which was named the ‘McCafferty Report’ after its author, a Labour MP from England) was finally voted down by the sanior pars of the Assembly, which instead adopted a text that re-affirmed and strengthened the right to conscientious objection. A sigh of relief went through Europe.
But there are still some people left who cannot accept that many doctors and nurses abstain from acts which they consider tantamount to murder. And they cannot accept that these doctors and nurses should have the right to act in accordance with their conscience. Freedom of Conscience??? Not, if that could limit access to abortion, the biggest achievement in mankind’s cultural history!!
The Swedish Parliament is spearheading this absurd and anti-human make-abortion-compulsory-for-all crusade. With a majority of 271 against 20 votes (with 18 abstentions), it has now adopted a resolution which runs:
“The resolution 1763 (2010), adopted October 7, 2010, by the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council, implies that health care workers should have the possibility to choose not to perform abortions. The position of the standing committee (i.e. the Swedish Parliaments standing committee on foreign affairs) has been expressed in the commission report 2009/10:UU15, “Human rights in Swedish Foreign Policy”. The standing committee stands firm that Sweden should support efforts which makes abortions free, safe and legal for all women. Sweden is one of few countries who are central in the international work focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights. The Swedish policy on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights remains stable. The standing committee notices that the issue of abortion is not covered by the EU treaty. The standing committee remain negative to the content of Resolution 1763 (2010) and consider the [Swedish] delegation to take more action to accomplish a change of this resolution.”
Indeed, Sweden is one of rather few countries that considers the world-wide promotion of abortion as a top priority in its foreign policy. Let us all hope that those few countries, who for that matter could fittingly be described as “axis of evil” and “rogue states”, remain unsuccessful in their attempt to impose their perverted morality on the rest of Europe and the world.
