Updated OHCHR Report on Sexual Orientation

By Stefano Gennarini, J.D. | June 3, 2015

On Monday, the OHCHR posted the much anticipated update of the 2012 report on discrimination and violence on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity on the website of the Human Rights Council. Like the report it is meant to update, it is replete with unfounded assertions about the obligation of UN member states.

For example, the report states that countries have obligations to:

  • Recognize homosexual couples and give them the same benefits as marriage between a man and a woman, including parental rights for non-related adults
  • Enact special protections for individuals who identify as LGBT in criminal and employment laws and other law enforcement mechanisms
  • Recognize transsexual sex-change in law
  • Grant special asylum rights to individuals who identify as LGBT

This time round, the report even attacks “reparative therapy” calling for countries to ban it.

The OHCHR report can be found here, listed as Document A/HRC/29/23.
