Women choosing childlessness

By Susan Yoshihara, Ph.D. | March 4, 2012

Former UN Population Division head Joseph Chamie has a recent article about how the rise of childlessness poses profound challenges to economic growth. Doug Sylva, coeditor with me on our new book about population and security, argues that childlessness is not the only problem or even the main problem. He proposes that the only variable that strongly and consistently correlates to raising national fertility levels is the extent to which women go beyond having two children to have three or four. Read his chapter on what European nations can do about it.
