BACKGROUND

Ending poverty in all its forms is the first of the Sustainable Development Goals, and achieving this goal is closely related to achieving many other global goals, including those relating to health and education.  For young people, poverty during childhood can have a lifelong impact.  Lack of access to good nutrition can hinder healthy development, and for many young children, particularly girls, poverty is a barrier to receiving a good education that can enable them to thrive and contribute to their communities.

Investment in the health and education of children, particularly those whose opportunities are limited by poverty, is key to reducing poverty more broadly, as those children’s future successes will benefit their families and communities as well.  Yet children do not exist in isolation, but in the context of the family.  Family stability is an important protection against poverty and other harms, and governments should prioritize support for the family as an important part of poverty reduction.  When families are strong and enabled to provide their children with nutrition, health care, and a good education, the ripple effects of that investment are felt throughout communities and across generations.
