EVENT BACKGROUND

What should parents do when their child or adolescent says they were born in the wrong body? It is a question that parents and policymakers are increasingly facing around the world because of the exponential growth of children and adolescents manifesting gender dysphoria. This phenomenon has been noted in many countries as a major challenge to the protection of the physical and mental health of children. It raises questions about the ability of children to consent to treatments that are life-altering such as hormones and surgeries.

It raises questions about the role of the state. Some states now deprive parents of custody when they deny their children access to so-called “gender-affirming care.”

Many countries who pioneered transgender medical protocols are now banning the procedures. It also raises questions about the role of educators as well as traditional and social media. In many cases, a direct correlation between the spread of transgender ideology in schools and social media and the dramatic rise in cases of children and adolescents who manifest gender has been observed. This event will discuss these recent trends from the perspective of parents, children and adolescents, policy experts, and human rights advocates.
