ISTANBUL, May 30 (C-Fam) In a broadside against what he considers the decadent West, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that all his country’s geopolitical clout will be deployed against gender ideology and population control.
This occurred at an international conference on the family last week in Istanbul.
“The fight against LGBT perversion is also a fight for freedom, dignity, and the future of humanity,” Erdogan said in the concluding speech at the International Family Forum held on May 23 and 24. The conference was sponsored by Erdogan’s government and was attended by ministers from 27 countries from Africa, Asia, and the Balkans.
Erdogan called gender ideology a “threat to humanity, women and children” and a “national security threat.” He pledged to work with everyone to protect the family and to fight the LGBT agenda domestically and abroad.
The conference addressed a full spectrum of policies to protect the family, including defending traditional man-woman marriage, incentives for young people to marry and found a family, how to raise fertility, and the effect of technology on the family. It also featured warnings against population control, abortion, gender ideology and harmful sexuality education that normalizes promiscuity as well as homosexual and transgender behavior.
The president of Türkiye declared the year 2025 to be the Year of the Family and pledged his government to a decade of action to protect the family in both domestic policies and the international diplomacy.
“Any society in which the family collapses is doomed to decay and collapse. It is the primary duty of all of us to resist all kinds of attacks against the family. To defend the family is to defend human beings,” Erdogan said.
He sounded the alarm about Türkiye’s low fertility and pledged to fund programs to boost fertility and protect the family from the threat of what he called “cultural imperialism.”
“The family unit is under systematic attack. Cultural imperialism is attempting to hack the institution of family and eliminate the bonds of love, sharing, and solidarity,” Erdogan said. “Many traditional institutions are losing their meaning. In the name of individual freedoms and modernization, we see that spiritual values are being eroded. Global imperialism is allowed to target the family,” he said.
He warned against a decadent Western individualistic culture that is “infiltrating the fabric of our society, beginning with our youth.” He said this culture emphasized individual freedom but “what is presented as freedom is actually a great system of captivity and slavery.”
Erdogan said that individuals were left vulnerable to social control by a global cabal of multinational businesses, foreign governments, and non-governmental organizations and that technology had only accelerated this threat. “Everywhere in the world, the erosion of the institution of family has turned people into mere consumers of popular culture,” he said.
He also said the LGBT agenda had become a system of “fascism and oppression” and called gender ideology a form of child-abuse.
In veiled criticism of the European Union, he denounced attacks against politicians in neighboring countries for defending marriage as the union of a man and a woman and lamented how “artists, businesspeople, politicians, and scientists are being socially lynched, turned into the walking dead, just for opposing the LGBT plague.”
Stefano Gennarini, J.D., Vice President for Legal Studies of C-Fam, publisher of the Friday Fax, was one of the experts invited to address the conference. Gennarini spoke of how Western countries, and the European Union especially, won’t allow the United Nations to even speak about the family unless there is recognition of so-called “rainbow families.” He described how for decades international policies and programs have been controlled by the government bureaucracies of decadent Western societies. “It all started with propaganda about having a small family and, over the years, it has morphed into propaganda about having rainbow families.”
