Webinar: Surrogacy and Vulnerable Women in Developing Countries

On Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at 11:00am ET (GMT-5)

Through gestational surrogacy, women are exploited all over the world. Their eggs are bought and sold. Their wombs are rented. While international organizations are largely silent, critics call for national and even international bans.

There are many questions attendant to this billion-dollar business.

What are the rights of children conceived this way?

Is surrogacy inherently exploitative to the women whose eggs are harvested and whose wombs are rented?

Are women aware of the risks that surrogacy poses? Are they aware of their rights?  This event will explore these and other key questions surrounding gestational surrogacy.

The event will also launch a report on raising awareness about gestational surrogacy among vulnerable women in developing countries prepared by Daniela Bandelli as part of a research project funded by the European Commission (womoges.wordpress.com), in collaboration with the organization Steadfast, and C-Fam (Center for Family and Human Rights).

The report proposes that—at a bare minimum—development initiatives should alert women to the physical and mental risks surrogacy poses and educate them about their rights and the rights of the child.
