Event Background

In November 2025, the Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, Ms. Reem Alsalem, published a report on surrogacy.

Her findings are damning: this practice is now a huge market worth nearly $14.95 billion, which is expected to reach $99.75 billion by 2033. And this market is based on the vulnerability of women who are exploited and continue to be victims of trafficking. The rapporteur also adds that regulating or supervising such a practice is illusory. There is only one solution: abolition.

Unfortunately, surrogacy is still too often presented as an alternative way of procreating or as a generous act that can be ethical or even generous.

This is completely false because, regardless of the conditions, surrogacy always involves using a woman to “produce” a child for the benefit of third parties and separating the child from its mother forever.

In order to expose the lies surrounding surrogacy and show the reality of this practice, we worked with Bernard de La Villardière, a renowned investigative journalist, and Alice d’Oléon, one of the directors on his team.

Program

The event program will further explore these issues through a documentary screening followed by speakers and discussion.

While surrogacy is often presented as a modern or supportive solution, this documentary highlights several realities:

– The exploitation of poor women or women suffering from mental health issues.

– The objectification of the child;

– The intentional severing of the mother-child bond;

– The psychological consequences for the children.

The documentary reveals the reality of surrogacy through field investigations in Ukraine, Greece, Great Britain, and France.  It gives a voice to clients, intermediaries, surrogate mothers, children born through surrogacy, as well as doctors, midwives, lawyers, feminists, and others.
