ANALYSIS: Biden’s Call for a UN Inquisition into America Is Even Worse Than It Seems

NEW YORK, July 30 (C-Fam) The Biden administration’s decision to invite UN experts to investigate America’s human rights record is much more significant than U.S. critics of the move have been ready to admit.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken issued an open invitation to UN human rights experts to investigate the United States’ record on human rights earlier this month, something no previous U.S. administration has ever done.

Judging by the weak and confused reactions to this announcement, it is clear that America’s ruling class does not really understand the singular threat to U.S. sovereignty and self-government this poses.

Critics have said the invitation is risible because it would subject the U.S. to the scrutiny of the Human Rights Council, which includes China, Russia, Iran and other human rights abusers. However, the U.S. human rights record is already subject to review by the UN Human Rights Council.

Critics have also said the invitation is wrongheaded because it undermines the status of America as the most exceptional of all nations on earth. While this sentiment is entirely honorable, it is also misguided. Even if America were not exceptional the American people and their representatives should be livid with the Biden administration.

The real problem is this: the invitation will unleash a veritable international inquisition that will threaten the sovereignty and self-rule of the American people. There will be an endless succession of visits from forty-four UN human rights experts who carry human rights portfolios ranging from health to religious freedom to removing U.S. sanctions on Cuba and canceling sovereign debts. This UN inquisition will go on for years under the Biden administration.

Each UN expert will be trotted around the country with all the pomp and honors of a foreign dignitary. They will be welcomed at our elite universities and paraded in high society events. They will hold public and private consultations to hear all manner of grievances against America. After a couple of weeks, the experts will publish their reports with a summary judgment on the status of racism, health (including reproductive health), religious freedom, and other issues in America. The reports will have been largely prepared in advance as is typical. And they will find that the U.S. is a uniquely racist and sexist country. They will blame U.S. laws and policies protecting the religious freedom of Churches for the oppression of women and sexual minorities.

The reports prepared by the UN experts will be used by the enemies of America, from both within and without, to create instability and mistrust in U.S. institutions and to further divide the country. Academics in U.S. universities will incorporate these reports into their canons of “wokeness.” U.S. government officials will cite them in their own work. Politicians like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will use them as evidence of why the United States needs to be founded anew. At the UN, delegations hostile to the United States will wield them as cudgels against U.S. diplomats at every opportunity in negotiations and debates.

Skeptics of this process could note several problems with the experts that populate the UN human rights system. They could note the poor quality their work, as the U.S. Commission on Unalienable Rights did last year. They may want to point out the debatable credentials of the experts, as for example, the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, an abortion doctor who promotes the legalization of prostitution. Moreover, the UN experts that have been invited include individuals whose mandates cover human rights issues that have never been legally recognized by the United States as binding.

Officials in the Biden administration know the agenda of UN experts goes far beyond the binding treaties the U.S. has ratified and the U.S. Constitution. The Biden administration is offering to welcome each and every one of them to the country.
