Islamic Human Rights Body Comes Out Against “Woke” Agenda

NEW YORK, January 27 (C-Fam) An Islamic Human Rights Commission has condemned Western efforts to impose homosexual and transgender issues internationally. Additionally, they have called on diplomats from Islamic countries to fight attempts to redefine the family.

The Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) adopted a declaration on the right to family life that criticizes Western countries and the United Nations system for promoting homosexuality and transgender ideology as human rights issues.

The declaration says these new norms are “contrary to universal human rights, offensive to religious values as well as potentially harmful for the physical and psychological health of the child” and the UN bodies that promote these norms “overstep their mandate.”

The declaration also condemns “the attempts to force SOGI  [sexual orientation and gender identity] norms by some donor countries and organizations on developing countries through media, exploiting financial needs for development, and political pressure on countries that are in need of humanitarian and development assistance.”

The OIC, which represents and advises the 57-member group of Islamic countries, published the declaration on the “Right to Family Life: Islamic and Human Rights Perspectives to Counter Challenges to the Institution of Marriage” after a thematic debate during its 20th Regular Session on 18th December 2022.

The declaration cites the Quran as well as international human rights treaties to call on countries to protect the family, which it calls the oldest and most fundamental institution “since Adam and Eve” and defines it in line with international human rights law as the “natural and fundamental group unit of society.

In defiance of gender ideology, the declaration recognizes that “wife and husband enjoy equal human dignity and fundamental human rights but have different roles and responsibilities within the family and society.”

“Any form of promiscuity, sexual permissiveness, or living relationships or cohabitation outside marriage, in the name of ‘freedom of choice,’ that potentially threatens the integrity of the family is harmful for the fabric of the society, hence is categorically rejected,” it states.

“It is because of this Divine wisdom that all Abrahamic faiths Judaism, Christianity, and Islam view homosexuality as detestable and forbidden,” the declaration decries, condemning “attempts to redefine marriage to include same-sex unions, a deviant narrative of genderless marriage, alternative form of the family.”

“New and controversial notions of SOGI and so-called LGBTQ unions,” it emphasizes, “are neither universal nor recognized by international human rights standards.”

The declaration calls on OIC member states to work together with allies from Asia, Africa, and Europe against these issues, including by collaborating with “Pro-Family organizations.”

The declaration points out that “weakening of marriage and family institution has widespread detrimental effects on economic growth, demographics, the health of individuals and societies and children’s future. Western societies have particularly been hit hard by challenges to marriage and family, which has caused a family crisis.” It calls on OIC member states to adopt comprehensive national and foreign policies to protect the family to the “maximum extent possible”, including safeguarding “the innocence of children” from pornography and comprehensive sexuality education.

The declaration also calls for a competition to create “an artistic symbol or logo that highlights the great diversity yet the Islamic unity on the traditional family values to counter the rainbow pride flag.” It cited the widely publicized behavior of the Moroccan football team during the 2022 FIFA World Cup as an example of traditional family values.
