Highlights from UPR Session 50
The 50th session of the Universal Periodic Review was held in April-May of 2025, and 13 countries were reviewed: Andorra, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Honduras, Jamaica, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, and Panama. All of the countries issued responses to the recommendations they received, and their reports were adopted at the 61st regular session of the Human Rights Council in March 2026. The United States of America was originally scheduled to be reviewed during this session, but has largely disengaged from the UN human rights system and did not submit a national report, resulting in a postponement of its review.
Here are some highlights from the 50th UPR session:
- C-Fam submitted reports for the reviews of Honduras, Malawi, Andorra, and the United States of America in its capacity as a civil society participant in the process. The reviews of Honduras, Malawi, and Andorra focused on issues around maternal health, the protection of life, the centrality of the family, and national sovereignty, encouraging these countries to join the Geneva Consensus Declaration coalition, as their laws, to varying degrees, enshrine protection of the unborn and/or support for the natural family. The review of the United States congratulates the country on rejoining the coalition following the election of President Trump to a second term, and urging the U.S. to end the practice of pressuring other countries on issues of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) that persisted during Trump’s first term and expanded during the Biden administration.
