UNITED NATIONS: The Center for Family and Human Rights (C-Fam) praised Colombia for rejoining the Geneva Consensus Declaration. The international agreement promotes women’s health, life, and the family.
Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella said rejoining the Declaration was a priority for his administration.
Colombia Ambassador Ordóñez Maldonado said his country’s commitment to the Geneva Consensus Declaration was a “matter of conscience” at a signing ceremony on October 8th.
“Our nation reaffirms its fidelity to natural law and its commitment to defending the pillars that sustain every civilized society,” said Ambassador Ordóñez. He also said it was evidence of a global majority of nations defending national sovereignty against outside ideological pressure.
Bethany Kozma, Director of Global Affairs at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, represented both the United States and the GCD Secretariat at the signing. She welcomed Colombia’s return.
Kozma described the Geneva Consensus Declaration as “a platform to stand together and speak with greater strength in defense of life, the family, women’s health, and national sovereignty.” She expressed a desire for the coalition to develop into a unified diplomatic bloc in multilateral forums and a platform for cooperation between states to advance the principles of the Geneva Consensus Declaration in domestic laws and policies.
Launched in 2020 by the first Trump administration and 33 other nations, the Geneva Consensus Declaration has now grown to 47 nations. It commits signatories to promote women’s health and strengthen the family in a context of mutual cooperation and respect for sovereignty, and to advance these commitments in the context of multilateral organizations.
A coalition of more than 130 civil society organizations from every region also supports the initiative.
Founded in 1997 to monitor and affect the social policy debate at the United Nations, C-Fam is a non-partisan, non-profit research institute dedicated to reestablishing a proper understanding of international law, protecting national sovereignty and the dignity of the human person.
