Hungary Warned in Advance About Pro-Abortion UN Resolution

NEW YORK, September 9 (C-Fam) The Friday Fax reported last week that the government of Hungary co-sponsored a UN General Assembly resolution that placed providing “access to safe abortion” as necessary to fulfill human rights.

The Hungary-sponsored resolution also advanced transgender ideology. Not only did Hungary sponsor the resolution, but Prime Minister Victor Orban’s government refused to support any amendments that would have protected the unborn child and a traditional understanding of human sexuality.

The Friday Fax has learned this week that the Hungarian government, long supported by American conservatives including social conservatives, was warned well in advance of the dangers of the resolution.

Weeks prior to the debate in the General Assembly last Friday, the activist group CitizenGo presented the Hungarian government a petition with 128,392 signatures of Hungarian citizens warning the government about the resolution. Eszter Schittl of CitizenGo launched the petition that was addressed to Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, State Secretary for Families Ágnes Hornung, and Hungarian Ambassador to the United Nations Zsuzsanna Horváth.

The petition explained that the resolution “could be an important steppingstone for the international acceptance of abortion as a human right.” It also expressed the fear that the resolution would give UN agencies a mandate to promote abortion with financial resources and political support.

The resolution refers to the notion of “safe abortion” and the petition pointed out there is no such thing as a “safe abortion” for the unborn child, and psychological consequences for the mother.

The 128,000 Hungarian citizens asked their government to adhere to the Hungarian constitution that protects the unborn child before birth and from the moment of conception.

The petition was personally handed to the Hungarian Ambassador to the United Nations by Dr. Renáta Faragó.

The Hungarian government ignored the wishes of the petitioners and appeared to ignore their own constitution by remaining one of the sponsors of the resolution. What’s more, while a few dozen African countries proposed amendments to the resolution that would have taken away abortion and LGBT language, Hungary voted against all the amendments.

Dr. Imre Téglásy of Human Life International Hungary issued a statement to the Hungarian foreign minister asking him to “overrule the shameful pseudo-Christian position shown in New York” and to follow the provisions of the Hungarian constitution.

Conservatives and social conservatives have been enthusiastic supporters of the Victor Orban government in Hungary. The World Congress of Families has held two summits in Budapest. C-Fam (publisher of the Friday Fax) has hosted conferences for the Hungarian government on Capitol Hill. Prime Minister Orban has been welcomed to speak at the Conservative Political Action Committee conference. There has been a steady parade of American conservatives to Budapest including Tucker Carlson from Fox News, and American commentator Rod Dreher who has moved to Budapest.

One observer pointed out that the only conservative position that Hungary has taken is over immigration, a position Orban couches in terms of protecting Christian civilization. Hungary has also instituted laws that encourage mothers to have more babies, an issue that has been praised by the newest right wing in the United States, including American academics like Gladden Pappin of the University of Dallas and others. And it is true that Hungary has broken with the European Union over some issues, particularly immigration, but Hungary has never been willing to break the EU consensus at the UN over social policies like abortion and sexual orientation and gender identity.

So far, conservatives and social conservatives have been silent over Hungary’s support of expanded abortion rights.
